The California Building is a working studio building, and it stays locked. Visiting an artist is by appointment. Two parts of the campus are open on their own: Mojo Coffee Gallery, with its own street entrance and hours, and the grounds, where the public art and California Street Farm can be seen any time. Here is how it all works, so you know what to expect before you come.
Visiting is by appointment: agree on a time with the artist first, and they’ll be expecting you when you arrive.
Start with the artist’s page in our online directory. That is where you’ll find their studio number and how to reach them.
The building is locked and there is no directory or intercom at the door, so the artist will meet you at the entrance at the time you agreed.
The accessible entrance is up the ramp off the southeast parking lot, along the east side of the building from 22nd Ave NE. It is marked with the wheelchair symbol on the building map above and on the map below. Let the artist know you’ll use the ramp so they can meet you there.
Mojo Coffee Gallery is inside the building but has its own entrance on the street and its own hours, 7am to 6pm every day. No appointment needed. Come in for coffee and see the work on the walls.
The public art around the building is outdoors and open to see whenever you like. All three sculptures can be seen from 22nd Ave NE.
The front entry glass facade at 2205 California St NE was designed by Phil Daniel. In his words:
“Glass teaches you to listen. To light, to time, to the place it lives in. These windows were made for this building’s soul.”
California Street Farm, an urban farm across 22nd Ave NE from the building, runs a farmstand every Monday, 4:30 to 6:30pm, June through October, and operates as a CSA. californiastreetfarm.com
The building opens its doors for open studio events through the year, and each has its own character.
Art-A-Whirl® in May is the biggest. Nearly every studio opens, and the halls are full of artists and visitors. The California Building was there at the start of it, and it remains the fullest picture of the building you can get in a day.
California Dreamin’ is the building artists’ signature three-day fall open studio event, and typically includes artist demonstrations and mini weekend classes.
Second Saturday Open Studios days the rest of the year are smaller and quieter, a chance to catch a handful of artists at work, meet them, and talk with them at your own pace, without the crowds.
No appointment needed for any of these: just wander the floors, meet whoever’s in, and see the building the way the people who work here every day do.
